• Excellent book on a seldom discussed topic
• Etiquette, by its very nature, changes with the times. Cellphone etiquette, for example, couldn't exist until the invention of the eponymous device. While cannabis (*not* weed, pot etc.) has existed for millennia, its recent legalization in select areas has brought with it a whole host of etiquette questions. Fear not, lovers of both decorum and dank-ness, Emily Post has you covered!
  
  If you live in (or will be visiting) a legal state, this book is THE primer for being cultured with cannabis. With its throwback cover design and 50's-inspired artwork, Post pokes gentle fun at a time period when such a book would be relegated to bookshops reeking of incense and cluttered with crystals. Contained within are answers to many questions you didn't know you had, from gifting cannabis to cannabis-themed dinner parties and dispensary decorum.
  
  The only thing keeping the title from greatness is also its main selling point. This book deals exclusively with cannabis in legalized states, and thus doesn't much apply to those living in the remaining 80% of the states where cannabis is illegal. While I am sure this is done for legal reasons (or perhaps to give the impression that being a law-abiding citizen is the highest etiquette of all), it ignores the vast majority of people to whom most of these tips do not apply. A polar opposite set of etiquette rules are in play for those of us who reside in such areas. Delicate questions like "Do I have to smoke up my dealer?" and "When is it okay to ask my buddy for the number of his "guy"? won't be answered here.
  
  Overall, for those fortunate souls who live in legalized states, this handbook is a perfect primer on a growing field of etiquette from the highest authority. For the rest of us, however, we'll have to content ourselves with a dreamy sigh at the idea of one day having the safety and freedom to have such elegance as a cannabis bar cart in our home for guests (and not the delicate multi-hour conversational dance to find out if they're 'cool' or not).

• An informative book with good, clear photographs of the gowns. I got this book for my mom when I went to the Oscar de la Renta exhibit at the MFAH. The official companion book the museum was selling to go with the exhibit did not contain many clear photos of the dresses in the exhibit, but I found that this book had much better pictures of the dress in the show.
• A representative account of one of Fashion's most brilliant designers. So unique were his designs that one could identify his work with just one brief look... Exquisite!

Un viaggio nella storia dell’arte figurativa attraverso un insolito filo conduttore il pane, cibo semplice e povero, ma carico di infiniti significati simbolici e da sempre presente sulle nostre tavole.
Di un marroncino che difficilmente illumina la scena, esso ha infatti raramente occupato il centro delle tele, nella stessa maniera in cui di rado risulta essere piatto principale. Ma proprio per questa sua presenza discreta e costante si presta, forse come nessun’altro alimento, a percorrere i secoli, attraversando culture e strati sociali diversi.
Il percorso parte dall’Antico Egitto, dove nasce il pane come lo conosciamo oggi. Se è infatti ragionevole affermare che nella Preistoria l’uomo si cibasse di semi di cereali, interi o macinati, mischiati ad acqua per creare un impasto molliccio e gradevole al palato (la cottura è un passaggio successivo), è agli Egizi che va il merito della scoperta decisiva per arrivare al pane comunemente inteso.
Si tratta della fermentazione, processo probabilmente scoperto in modo casuale, tramite la mera osservazione di ciò che avviene in natura quell’impasto di cereali e acqua, infatti, se lasciato per un giorno a riposare a temperatura ambiente, aumenta di volume e assume un aroma più piacevole, e una volta cotto, risulta più morbido e digeribile.
Gli Egizi credono che i defunti necessitino di nutrimento anche dopo la morte naturale, per loro, è dunque lasciare nelle tombe pane e altre cibarie, oltre a statuette raffiguranti individui intenti a impastare e mettere in forno.
Da qui in avanti (e con costanti migliorie nella preparazione del prodotto) il legame fra arte e pane non si spezzerà mai, ritornando come elemento imprescindibile dell’iconografia di qualsiasi civiltà.
Greci e Romani dispongono già di una varietà di pani davvero cospicua, come testimoniano anfore, mosaici e affreschi dell’epoca. Ma è con l’avvento del Cristianesimo che questo alimento diventa protagonista il pane è il corpo di Cristo, offerto in sacrifico agli uomini, e il “dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano” è un’invocazione dell’uomo a Dio di essere nutrito, materialmente e spiritualmente. Forme di pane compaiono nei vari episodi conviviali del Vangelo, dall’Ultima Cena, alle Nozze di Cana, alla Cena in Emmaus, che costituiscono parte essenziale del repertorio di ogni artista da Giotto fino almeno al Seicento.
In un senso più laico, il termine “pane” è usato in numerose figure retoriche di uso comune (“togliere il pane di bocca”, “guadagnarsi il pane”) come sinonimo di cibo tout court, o del raggiungimento di un tenore di vita tale da soddisfare quantomeno i bisogni primari propri e dei famigliari.
Il pane è, in effetti, il primo e più elementare alimento creato dall’ingegno dell’uomo, che dopo essersi cibato per millenni di cacciagione, frutta e verdura, introduce nella propria dieta un elemento che implica una complessa lavorazione e la conoscenza di una molteplicità di tecniche e processi.
Accanto al prodotto finito, acquistano pari dignità, dunque, gli attori di questo processo mietitori, setacci, forni, panettieri, tutti simboli dell’operosità di una comunità e della dignità dei ceti meno abbienti.
A rendere omaggio a questi soggetti pensa soprattutto la “pittura di genere” scene di ambientazione popolaresca che spopolano a margine della pittura ufficiale, dalla seconda metà del XVI secolo in avanti, anticipando per certi versi quella cruda rappresentazione del mondo dei diseredati che caratterizzerà il Realismo ottocentesco.
Slegato da evidenti significati simbolici, il pane è infine una presenza costante nelle nature morte di ogni epoca, da quelle barocche ai quelle cubiste, fino ai toast della Pop Art.
È un viaggio, dunque, di circa 4000 anni, fra arte e cucina, in cui l’arte si è reinventata infinite volte, mentre il pane ha forse perso qualcosa del suo significato religioso e sociale, ma ha saputo mantenere una posizione privilegiata nei gusti dei gourmets.

The three poles to be conquered in 1909 were the North Pole, the South Pole, and the so-called Pole of Altitude in the Himalayas. (The South pole was sometimes divided into the geographic south and magnetic south poles.) The expeditions would face extraordinary difficulties, extremely harsh conditions, tremendous hardship, and death to claim the fame of being the first to plant their flags on these poles.
  
  At the end of the year the explorers were celebrities. Americans Robert Peary and Matthew Henson were hailed as the discovers of the North Pole. Britain’s Ernest Shackleton set a new geographic "Furthest South" record. Shackleton's teammate, Australian Douglas Mawson, reached the Magnetic South Pole. "Italy’s Duke of the Abruzzi set an altitude record that would stand for a generation during his mountaineering expedition to the Himalaya's eastern Karakoram. The Duke attempted K2 and established the standard route up the most notorious mountain on the planet.
  
  Larson points out in the preface "This book especially benefited from my participation in the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program, which allowed me to go where the Antarctic explorers went, camp where they camped, and climb where they climbed. Always traveling with others, and frequently in the company of experts, through this program I saw much of what Shackleton, Mawson, and the other early visitors to the Ross Sea region saw, from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole and summit of Mount Erebus. Extended stays at Shackleton’s Cape Royds and near Scott’s Hut Point and Cape Evans, where the explorers’ primitive winter quarters remain intact down to their unused crates of hardtack biscuits and long-frozen meat in the larder, gave insight into how the parties lived beyond what I could hope to glean from archival research."
  
  The finished book contains notes, an index, photos, and maps. While I thought Larson did an admirable job following the three expeditions over the course of the book, my reading experience would have been greatly enhanced by the inclusion of photos and maps, which those who get the pleasure of reading the published editions will no doubt appreciate immensely.

• I received this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaway program. It was an excellent overview of the three explorations accomplished in 1909. Admiral Peary’s race to the North Pole, Ernest Shackleton’s race to the South Pole and lastly, Luigi Amedeo, the Duke of Abruzzi’s climb to the highest peak of K2 for that time.
  I enjoyed reading about the challenges these brave men endured to accomplish their feats. Starvation, freezing temperatures and in Amedeo’s climb, terrifying heights were only some of these challenges. Some of their accomplishments are now disputed, but they were headline-making feats at the time. This became the last years of true exploration for our above ground world.
  We still have other things to explore, other worlds, and our own seas in which we find new species every day. I liked reading about these men, this was a time when the wealthy paid or did the exploring, and the government did not get involved.
  If you enjoy why men explored the unknown and how it happened, you will like this book. I highly recommend it.

• This is a terrific series..
  I found Ken after hearing about the First Colony series and quickly read the first five books.. While waiting for book six I saw the Ascension series and blew thru those six books and was really hoping for more in that series... Sooo good...Ken, you really need to consider a spin-off of Ascension..
  Anyway, this was a great book and can’t wait for number 8.
  Oh, and thanx for the bio info at the end of the book. Interesting stuff..
• This Colony series by Ken Lizoto mesmerized me into reading the whole series in less than one week!
  
  Thank you, Ken, for writing this wonderful science fiction adventure. Your writing excels in terms of describing exciting battles and novel technologies as well as creating believable personalities and relationships.
  
  One thing I'd like to see you add to you Colony series is some details about the exact size of New Earth compared to old Earth, including relative gravity, relative size of oceans and land mass.
  
  You’re an outstanding writer.
  
  PS I also enjoyed the audio books listening to several chapters and reading others.
• This author is able to mold the plot in such a way that you're left leaning into the screen (if you're on ), I get excited every time I get to continue reading into this series and even read this before two other books I purchase first.
  
  I highly recommend starting from book one as even though each book could be standalone you'll miss out on a lot of history.

• While I enjoy the characters and the general plotlines (both major and minor) of this series, I don't like loose ends. Some authors like to think they are writing a 'cliff-hanger' ending to draw readers to the next book. Almost no one can write a good cliff-hanger, they are just a bunch of incomplete stories. This book was one big loose end.
• So easy to read. After 7 books the colony seems like 'family', I know them all so well.

• The whole concept of colonizing a planet filled with remains of a previous advanced civilization left the doors wide open for the author’s imagination to run rampant. He made the most of it taking us on a journey of exploration like few others Couldn’t put it down!
• First started getting to know Ken's writing style with the First Colony series Book1, and have not stopped yet. I have thoroughly enjoyed this escape into sci-fi adventure and will certainly be ready to read the next in this series. Thank you Ken and keep up the good work.

• A story very much worth reading, a very unique take of a LitRPG story line. If one like science fiction or fantasies this book is a excellent blend of both, I would say the author has a active and creative imagination.
• I'd say that the characters other than the MC could be fleshed out a bit more, they come across as one dimensional. This can not be said about the MC though, a complex creature that one is. Highly recommended
• Better than the first book (most of the backstory was taken care of already), this second book of the series stepped things up. Now I have to wait for book 3.
• A refreshing take on Scifi litrpg, my only complaint is the amount of sleep lost reading through book 1 and 2. A brilliant series bringing something new to the genre.
• This is a great series, I really enjoyed it, and I really look forward to the next one. Interesting world building and good character development.
• I really liked this book can't wait to see where the next book takes the story I will definitely read the next book

• Am disappointed in this book, compared to the first. This one had a number of scenes where the protagonist committed violence, torture and murder, where it might not have been necessary.
  
  As another reviewer mentioned, there's a bit of "hand-wavium" happening in this book. All of these incredible feats performed by a mere 20 year-old. It broke my "suspension of disbelief" a couple of times.
  
  Am disappointed as I'd enjoyed Book 1 due to the problem-solving and character-building. Am really not sure if I'll buy the third book in this series, especially if this descent into darkness continues at this pace.
